I Winner Sean Avery to Old Friends February 2013
The 7-year-old Cherokee Run gelding, fifth at Gulfstream Park Feb. 6 in his final start for owner Black Swan Stable, is expected to arrive at the equine retirement home in mid-March. "He's a tough little guy and the kind of hard-knocking horse that you really can like," said Old Friends founder Michael Blowen. "The Black Swan people are going to make a generous contribution to Old Friends in support of his retirement. He's named after National Hockey League player Sean Avery, and we hope to get him to come here when the horse arrives." Black Swan racing manager John DeStefano bought Sean Avery for $30,000 as agent for Steven Schoenfeld at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale from Brookdale Sales, agent. Sean Avery's racing career was compromised because of frequent injuries. He enjoyed his best season as a 5-year-old in 2011. He won the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (gr. I) over Trappe Shot and Calibrachoa at Saratoga, plus the Longfellow Stakes at Monmouth Park. In 2012 he captured the Affiliate Stakes at Belmont Park. Trained for a time by Allen Iwiniski and by Michael Hushion, Sean Avery was retired with a record of 7-1-2 from 14 starts and earnings of $398,640. Bred in Kentucky by Darley, Sean Avery is out of the winning Forest Wildcat mare Latin Lynx and is a half brother to stakes-placed Stayclassysandiego and W W American.
