Please join us once again for The
Seventh Annual
The
“Yankee Fourtune” Hat
For the seventh consecutive year, MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® of Cape Cod and Old Friends of Kentucky are teaming up again for an unparalleled online shopping experience that began November 1st with their "Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby" auction. This unique Derby hat fundraiser is an annual event which features one-of-a-kind couture Derby hats created and donated by Sally Faith Steinmann of MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® to benefit the retired racehorses of Old Friends.
The
third hat up for bid in our auction series honors multiple graded
stakes winner, Yankee Fourtune. Bred in Kentucky by Brereton C.
Jones, Yankee Fourtune is perhaps best remembered for his
breakout year as a 3-year-old in 2010 with back-to-back turf wins
in the Hawthorne Derby (G3) at Hawthorne Race Course and the
Commonwealth Turf Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs. Yankee Fourtune
was retired to Old Friends in 2015 thanks to the efforts of
Harvey Clarke, for whom the grey gelding had achieved so much
success in graded stakes.
The
“Yankee Fourtune” chapeau was up for bid from January
2nd through the 12th.

Yankee Fourtune's racing career really took off in 2010 when he won the Hawthorne Derby in October followed by the Commonwealth Stakes for owners Harvey Clarke and Andrew Albstein, under trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. When asked about Yankee Fourtune, Michael Blowen, president and founder of Old Friends, said, “Yankee Fourtune exudes a perfect combination of grit and kindness. Like his sire, Yankee Gentleman, Yankee Fourtune was a consistent, durable athlete who's become one of the most lovable retirees at Old Friends. Also, he thinks his hat is as special as he is.“ Beth Shannon of Old Friends described Yankee Fourtune in the following way: “Personality-wise, he's a sweetie. As people-loving and easy-going as a horse can be. He gets along with horses, a peaceable guy. And he's very smart.” Clearly, a very special hat was needed to honor and welcome this kind-hearted new retiree to Old Friends. The resulting hat showcases Yankee's lovely coat that has gone from a deep grey to nearly white, his sweet, gentle personality and Harvey Clarke's racing silk colors of green and white. The foundation of the “Yankee Fourtune” hat was fashioned as a flat wide brim hat design using silver dupioni silk for the foundation.
Layers of ruffled pale silver organza, top stitched with silver thread, were used for the outer brim layers to reflect the movement of the Thoroughbred athlete at full gallop.
A band of matching ruched organza was then top stitched to the ruffled brim edges and then finished off with a gentle swish of swirling organza along the back brim.
A large anemone flower, a brand new trim innovation by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® created especially for Yankee Fourtune, was sculpted out of white silk organza for the petals. Each petal was then delicately top stitched with silver thread.
The center of the anemone is a shimmering black pebble button surround by a ring of softly gathered green tulle and an outer ruched layer of charcoal silk organza.
A medley of narrow emerald green silk and taffeta leaves, individually wired and shaped, were fashioned to frame the anemone.
Long charcoal silk organza “feathers”, a MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® trademark, were then carefully stitched, layered and shaped to add a splash of dramatic detail to the floral trim.
A layered sash, created out of charcoal silk organza lined with emerald green dupioni silk encircles the crown of the hat.
For the finishing touch, a shimmering black button adorns the back of the hat.
A white brocade was chosen for the lining of the “Yankee Fourtune” to match the gentle gelding's coat. The finished “Yankee Fourtune” hat design measures nearly 26 inches across inclusive of the ruffled brim layers.
As a physical remembrance of Yankee Fourtune, several strands of the gelding's tail hair were braided and woven into the trim of the hat, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind Derby chapeau that captures Yankee Fourtune not only in spirit but in substance as well. The purpose of this amazing millinery delight is to honor the life of Yankee Fourtune and all of the horses who, thanks to the generosity of those who support their aftercare, now graze in the warm sunshine of Dream Chase Farm for the rest of their lives. "Sally Faith Steinmann's works of millinery art have raised thousands of dollars and a priceless amount of awareness for all these great retired athletes. Their stunning beauty and indescribable originality symbolize what one great artist can do to positively alter the lives of so many deserving athletes." - Michael Blowen, President and founder of Old Friends Hats off to you, Yankee Fourtune!
