This unique Derby hat fundraiser is now an annual event which features one-of-a-kind couture Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® to benefit the retired racehorses of Old Friends. To learn more about Old Friends at Dream Chase Farm and bid on the hats, please visit the Old Friends website, or call them at 502-863-1775. The second hat that is up for bid in our fundraiser auction series honors the 22-year-old Kentucky-bred stallion and graded stakes winner, Patton. Cape Cod milliner Sally Faith Steinmann of MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® created this stunning one-of-a-kind couture Derby hat to honor this gentle bay stallion who arrived at Old Friends in 2011 thanks to the generous donation of Brereton C. Jones. We are so pleased this year to have Rosie Napravnik modeling our “Hats Off to the Horses” chapeaux for us. Thank you, Rosie! A very special thanks also goes to Matt and Wendy Wooley of EquiSport Photos for their photo shoots with Rosie and the horses of Old Friends. Thank you as well to Bella Rose Clothing Boutique, Lexington, Kentucky for furnishing Rosie's stunning dresses for the photo shoots.
The "Patton" Hat
With a sire named Lord at War and a dam named Slew Me Down, you might imagine that their offspring, named Patton, would be a fierce and fiery individual. Yet the opposite is true of this 22-year-old retiree affectionately called “Ghandi” by those who know him well. Beth Shannon, a volunteer at Old Friends, describes Patton as a horse who “feels like earth; green and moist and fertile, sweet as June, cloudless as an early summer sky, but deeper, more grounded. If I had to describe Patton in colors, I'd choose quiet versions of blue, brown and green. Patton is one of the most solidly trustworthy, kind horses I know. He loves to be kissed on the nose. Not just by special friends like some stallions, but by anyone. He's quiet, never calls attention to himself, but is very giving. But still waters run deep. He's still got a lively interest in mares and would outsmart you to get to them. Behind that calm, loving behavior, he's his own man.” To reflect the extraordinarily sweet-tempered nature of this horse, a stylish “top hat” Derby design befitting our gentleman stallion was chosen. Created with a unique blend of colors, tones and textures, the design captures Patton's bay coloring, sweet disposition and the fondness that so many feel for this much beloved retiree at Dream Chase Farm.
The foundation for the “Patton” hat design was fashioned out of bluish green dupioni silk and features a gentle upturned brim with a moderate “top hat” crown.
A single large fleur, adorning the back of the hat, was created out of swirling layers of deep plum silk, metallic blue taffeta, dusty lavender organza, cobalt blue taffeta, periwinkle silk and soft turquoise organza.
This floral centerpiece is framed by a bed of leaves fashioned out of various shades of green shantung, organza and taffeta to create a dramatic variegated leaf effect.
Alternating layers of gleaming black and chocolate tulle swirl around the crown of the hat and gather to form a loosely sculpted bow with long draping tails that spill down the back to symbolize Patton's bay coat and black mane and tail.
A layered sash, created out of crinkled mocha taffeta lined with chocolate brown taffeta, encircles the crown of the hat.
The “Patton” hat is stunning from every angle with no details left untouched; even the lining was created from soft turquoise blue metallic taffetta to coordinate with the trims.
The finished design measures approximately 15 inches; inclusive of the tulle sprays the design measures nearly 23 inches, end to end.
As a physical remembrance of Patton, several strands of the great stallion's tail hairs were braided and woven into the trim of the hat, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind Derby chapeau that captures Patton not only in spirit but in substance as well. The purpose of this amazing millinery delight is to honor the life of Patton and all of the horses who, thanks to the generosity of those who support their aftercare, now graze in the warm sunshine of Dream Chase Farm for the rest of their lives. ”We ask of the thoroughbreds, and they give, they serve us with dignity and satisfy our needs to compete - we owe it to them to provide the retirement they so justly have earned.” - Fred Stone
