The second hat up for bid in December during our fourth year of the Hats Off to the Horses auction series honors 20-year-old mare, Dancin' Renee, graded-stakes winning mare and 1997's New York Horse of the Year. Cape Cod milliner Sally Faith Steinmann of MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® has created this stunning one-of-a-kind couture Derby hat to honor New York-bred Dancin' Renee, one of the newest retirees to arrive at Old Friends thanks to the recent donation by her owner, Sanford Bacon.
The “Dancin' Renee” chapeau is another “first” for our auction series as we present a hat design created to honor our first mare. This dark bay daughter of Distinctive Pro (Mr. Prospector) out of three-time New York Broodmare of the Year Lolli Lucka Lolli, was named after Renee Levine, the mother of owner Sanford Bacon's wife, Nikki Bacon. As it turns out, many years ago Renee was a dancer in the Ziegfield Follies. To honor her, they decided to name the filly Dancin' Renee. With inspiration from the Ziegfield Follies and the lights of Broadway, the “Dancin' Renee” hat is a unique blend of colors, tones and textures with the horse's bay coloring boldly contrasting alongside Sanford Bacon's stable colors of red, black, and white. As stated in the Old Friends bio, when Dancin' Renee retired to Dream Chase at the age of 20 this September she had ”danced every dance and excelled at all that was asked of her”. A hat created to honor such a dancer had to be full of movement and dramatic flair. Indeed, it's a hat that says, “It's show time!”
A hat foundation was created using white dupioni silk with a delicate black lace border that spills over the brim edge and extends the overall length of the hat to nearly 21 inches.
Three ascending layers of ebony black and espresso chocolate tulle surround the entire brim, adding movement to the design. The overall effect represents this great muscled athlete stretching out at full gallop.
The distinctive red, black, and white racing silks of the Sanford Bacon Stable provide the basic color palette for the trimmings of this stunning Derby hat. The centerpiece is comprised of a single elegant rose curl created out of swirling layers of bold red taffeta and cranberry red crinkled organza.
This rose curl centerpiece is framed with a medley of rich black satin leaves. The setting for this medley is a bow created in three layers from dramatically contrasting materials: cranberry red metallic taffeta, black and red polka dot taffeta, and black silk organza. Like the lights of Broadway, a single black jewel glitters in the center of the rose curl. A matching sash of cranberry red taffeta lined with black taffeta surrounds the crown. A spray of black silk organza “feathers” are the final Ziegfield-inspired flourish for this centerpiece and give the entire hat a feeling of excitement and pizzazz!
Finally, a single black “dot” button adorns the back seam of the hat for a last dash of polka dot whimsy to create a hat that is stunning from all angles.
As a physical remembrance of Dancin' Renee, several strands of the great mare's tail hairs were braided and woven into the trim of the hat itself, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind Derby chapeau that captures Dancin' Renee not only in spirit but in substance as well. The purpose of this amazing millinery delight is to honor the life of Dancin' Renee and all of the horses who, thanks to the generosity of those who support their aftercare, now graze in the warm sunshine of Dream Chase Farm for the rest of their lives.
”We ask of the thoroughbreds, and they give, they serve us with dignity and satisfy our needs to compete - we owe it to them to provide the retirement they so justly have earned.” - Fred Stone Welcome Home, Dancin' Renee!
The “Dancin' Renee” was the second hat in our “Hats Off to the Horses” Derby hat auction series this season, and was up for bid from December 1st through the 11th, 2012. ___________________________________________________________
