First Annual The “Black Tie Affair” Hat For the very first year, MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® and Old Friends are teaming up for an unparalleled online shopping experience beginning November 1st, with a "Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby" auction. This unique Derby hat fundraiser will now be an annual event which features one-of-a-kind couture Kentucky Derby hats created and donated by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® to benefit Old Friends. Milliner Sally Faith Steinmann of MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® has created this stunning one-of-a-kind Derby hat in honor of 1991 Horse of the Year, Black Tie Affair. Black Tie Affair is a new arrival this summer to Dream Chase Farm, the home of Old Friends Equine. Because his coat was originally a gray that has become increasingly white over the years, a soft silver dupioni silk and silver silk organza were used for the hat itself with a combination of silver, white, red, and black trimmings to highlight this stallion's markings as well as his racing silk colors.
The silver dupioni silk hat foundation was layered with wavy alternating silver, soft gray, and white silk organza brims which offered a stunning edge to the brim and gave a feeling of movement to the entire design. And what could be a more perfect hat trim to honor this horse with than a black bowtie! Created in fine black silk, this bowtie conjures up visions of some fancy black tie affair.
Tiny red silk organza roses, a red satin lining, and the top white silk organza brim layers are reminiscent of Black Tie Affair's red racing silks. The swirling black dot veiling reminds us of this great stallion's dapple gray coat of earlier days.

At the end of the month, the winning bidder's name will be announced (unless they prefer to remain anonymous) and the next month's hat will be put up for bid. Freight charges will be at the expense of the winning bidder. Winning bidders, please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery of your hat in order to ensure proper sizing.
