Custom Derby Hats by Sally Faith Steinmann
For the fifth consecutive year, MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® and Old Friends are teaming up again for an unparalleled online shopping experience beginning November 1st with their "Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby" auction. This unique Derby hat fundraiser is now an annual event which features one-of-a-kind couture Derby hats created by MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® to benefit the retired racehorses of Old Friends. To learn more about Old Friends at Dream Chase Farm and bid on the hats, please visit the Old Friends website, or call them at 502-863-1775.
The third hat that is up for bid in our fundraiser auction series honors graded stakes winner and West Virginia-bred Afternoon Deelites. Descended from Damascus on his sire's side and Secretariat on his dam's side, Afternoon Deelites earned $1,061,193 for his owner Burt Bacharach during his career with 7 wins in 12 starts. The 21 year-old dark bay stallion was retired to Old Friends on May 22nd, 2011 thanks to Val Murrell of Clear Creek.

We are so pleased this year to have Rosie Napravnik modeling our “Hats Off to the Horses” chapeaux for us. Thank you, Rosie! A very special thanks also goes to Matt and Wendy Wooley of EquiSport Photos for their photo shoots with Rosie and the horses of Old Friends. Thank you as well to Bella Rose Clothing Boutique, Lexington, Kentucky for furnishing Rosie's stunning dresses for the photo shoots.

Beth Shannon, a volunteer at Old Friends, describes Afternoon Deelites as royally bred. “On his dad's side he's a great-grandson of Damascus whom he looks like,” Shannon relates. “On his mom's he's a great-grandson of Secretariat and Fanfreluche. He looks every inch royal. He's big, busting with muscle, with an interested, friendly, alert, proud eye. Kent Desormeaux once said that in terms of raw speed, Afternoon Deelites is the fastest horse he ever sat on in his life.”
A dramatic chapeau was needed to honor this accomplished equine athlete and to celebrate his new life at Old Friends. A stylish Derby hat design was created with a unique blend of colors, tones and textures that showcases Afternoon Deelites' bay coloring along with the imagery of ocean blues stemming from the name of the breeder, Blue Seas Music Inc., the royal breeding of the Damascus and Secretariat bloodlines, and the Burt Bacharach racing silk colors of royal blue and light blue-green.

The foundation for the “Afternoon Deelites” design was fashioned out of a rich chocolate brown taffeta that features a delicate curling embroidery pattern; a rich brown satin underbrim creates a luminescent effect when the wearer's face is upturned.

A single large fleur adorns the front of the hat and is created out of swirling layers of royal blue and two shades of aqua-blue organza. A large marbled button of shimmering blue with a gold wave pattern accents the center of the rose curl.

This floral centerpiece is framed by a bed of leaves fashioned out of shades of aquamarine blue and royal blue organza; large bow loops of rich navy blue and black silk organza complete the swirling trim design that is all about movement and balance.

Deep blue tulle is layered around the crown and gathers to form a loosely sculpted rose curl in the back of the hat, mimicking the swirling, curling motion of ocean waves.

A layered sash, created out of aqua blue organza and satin lined with deep blue taffeta, encircles the crown of the hat; accented with a marbled button to match the one that adorns the rose curl.

The “Afternoon Deelites” hat is stunning from every angle with no details left untouched; the lining was created from a bold blue dupioni silk to coordinate with the trims.

The finished design measures approximately 21 inches, end to end, inclusive of the bow loops and tulle layers that spill over the brim edge.

As a physical remembrance of Afternoon Deelites, several strands of the great stallion's tail hairs were braided and woven into the trim of the hat, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind Derby chapeau that captures Afternoon Deelites not only in spirit but in substance as well.
The purpose of this amazing millinery delight is to honor the life of Afternoon Deelites and all of the horses who, thanks to the generosity of those who support their aftercare, now graze in the warm sunshine of Dream Chase Farm for the rest of their lives.
We ask of the thoroughbreds, and they give, they serve us with dignity and satisfy our needs to compete - we owe it to them to provide the retirement they so justly have earned.” - Fred Stone

Welcome home to Old Friends, Afternoon Deelites!
