Friends Thoroughbred Retirement
A National Historic Landmark located in the heart of Bluegrass country, Keeneland has been an internationally respected Thoroughbred race track since it was established in 1936. It is also one of America's premier Thoroughbred auction houses.
Keeneland was established by a small group of businessmen during the Depression at a time when Kentucky was without a race track. Two gentlemen named Hal Price Headley and Major Louis Beard spear-headed the mission to create a racetrack that would help to preserve the rich history of Thoroughbred horse racing in Kentucky. They also hoped to contribute in charitable ways to the local community as well.
Today, Keeneland welcomes the world's very best Thoroughbreds every Spring and Fall with meets in April and October which serve as preparatory races for both the Derby and the Breeders' Cup. The most notable of these are the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (Grade 1), the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (Grade 1) and the Shadwell Turf Mile. In 2015 Keeneland will host the Breeders' Cup Championships for the very first time.
Keeneland makes charitable contributions to help promote the welfare of racehorses as well as to various local charities. Their Keeneland Library is also a great resource of information and photographs related to the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing.
