Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby

The "Commentator" Hat

Milliner Sally Faith Steinmann of MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® has created this stunning one-of-a-kind couture Derby hat in honor of 2-time Whitney Handicap winner, Commentator. Commentator is a new arrival this fall to Dream Chase Farm, the home of Old Friends.

Commentator, an 8 year-old gelding, is an amazing athlete with a huge fan base. This superlative athlete's career spanned a remarkable six seasons. Not only did Commentator win the Whitney Handicap twice and earn over $2 million, but he was also awarded a Beyer Speed figure of 120 in 2008 that was higher than the great Curlin and the undefeated Zenyatta for that same year. When Commentator arrived at Old Friends, owner Michael Blowen said it was "like having Elvis in the building". Such a champion truly deserves an exceptional hat that conveys this horse's public appeal, his remarkable achievements, and his sleek, powerful lines. Commentator's coat is a deep red chestnut. Consequently, a rich cinnamon dupioni silk was chosen for the hat body itself. To convey the muscular build of this young athlete, the hat was created with a sturdy wide upturned brim which is 22 inches across.

The "Dozen Roses" design is a classic MAGGIE MAE DESIGNS® trademark, most recently used for our "Dozen Roses for Rachel" hat which was selected this year by the Derby Museum for their annual hat contest exhibition. It seemed fitting that Commentator should have a hat created for him that was spilling over with red roses to celebrate both his stellar career as well as the upcoming "Run for the Roses" season. One dozen hand-rolled red silk organza and chiffon rose curls are nestled into a soft bed of black silk organza leaves which beautifully frame the roses against the crown and brim. Wispy red tulle sprays accent the roses and add a touch of Derby magic.

A combination of black and white trimmings reflect Commentator's racing silk colors used by owners Tracy and Carol Farmer for their star's six seasons on the track. A large oversized bow with medium tails and sash in black dupioni silk lined with red silk create a lovely balance for the roses.

To capture the stable's signature white diamond outline on their black racing silks, a diamond outline was created with clear rhinestones in a gold setting and then laid against the black dupioni bow. This diamond theme is echoed on the back seam of the hat with a smaller, delicate diamond that peeks through the rose curls and tulle sprays.
